About This Game World-famous red-haired adventurer Adol Christin awakens in the unfamiliar land of Celceta, remembering nothing more than his own name. Bereft of his past, Adol explores the town he happened to wander into, searching for any clues at all to his identity. Joined by a thief who claims to have spent some time at his side these past weeks, the young adventurer helps rescue doomed miners from a collapse – an act which ingratiates him to the local Romun Army general. Impressed with their skills, the pair is enlisted to explore the Great Forest of Celceta and map its vast expanses – a task which many have attempted in the past, but from which none have ever returned alive.Eager to unravel the mystery of his past and the cause of his predicament, Adol sets off with his new-old thief friend, Duren, to chart the untamed wilderness that claimed his memories. Along the way he meets numerous other individuals who seem to have encountered him before, and must carefully determine who among them can be trusted.Developer Nihon Falcom originally revisited the land and characters of Japanese cult favorite Ys IV in 2012 with Ys: Memories of Celceta on the PlayStation Vita, and the game found its way to North America the following year. When I had, I was glad a few years had passed in between them. Memories of Celceta feels much like a direct sequel to Seven rather than a distinct entry in a series. It is very similar in both gameplay and aesthetics. There is a lot of rolling around dodging, slamming the attack buttons as the screen fills up with all sorts of damage numbers and when enemies die masses of shiny coins and materials go flying everywhere. This frantic action is as enjoyable as always, but it took a number of steps backwards from Seven in my opinion.Seven was a fairly challenging game for myself, so I started Celceta on normal. It quickly became far too easy, and even the bosses were trivial by the middle of the game. I did not get a game over a single time during my playthrough. The system of certain attack types for certain enemy types has returned, but it is far less necessary due to this lack of challenge. I played as Adol for the vast majority of the game as I was doing enough damage I felt no reason to change, and mooks that resisted sword attacks seemed to be reduced in number. The bosses were lacking inspiration as well. There was not much of strategy involved in beating them, and the ability to relentlessly spam flash guard on any and all attacks made avoiding damage trivial. The plot is pretty typical fare. Not poor, but not a masterpiece by any means. It really lacks a strong villain, but manages to keep itself compelling by a pretty decent use of the ubiquitous amnesia trope. Most things are initially a mystery and you have to progress to gain a good understanding of the situation. The colourful cast of characters helps, as does a good translation. There are countless things to collect, monsters to kill, quests to complete (even though some are rather irritating and dull), and a good number of achievements that will require a couple playthroughs of the game to complete. My first go round took around 23 hours and I only completed just over half of the achievements.I had zero technical issues or crashes with the game. It doesn't look all that impressive, being a port of a PSVita game, but it runs quite well and there are a host of graphical options to spice things up. Saving and loading times are almost instantaneous. In summation: I enjoyed the game. The combat felt lacking at times, there's a pretty good amount of content for a fair price, it ran very well. I'd rate it about a 7.5/10. Good for fans of the series, fans of JRPGs, action-RPG fans, folks with short attention spans like myself who constantly need some stimulation like countless more enemies and constant item collection. If you aren't one of those groups, I'm not sure I would expect the game to blow you away.. One of my favorite Ys games to date. I still need to see how Napishtim, 7 & 8 stack up though since I haven't played them yet.The port was really impressive. For such a small localization team they did an excellent job. Performance was rock solid stable with no crashes or stutters. There's a plethora of different graphics options/resolutions and an unlocked framerate.Translation was excellent. I didn't notice a single obvious spelling or grammatical error. All of the dialogue was easy to follow and understand.Ys games have a story, but they aren't heavily focused on it like other Falcom titles. Celceta told a surprisingly darn good story with some really likable characters.Combat was similar to other Ys games, very smooth and very fast paced. Although once you start getting a hang of armor/weapon enhancements the game gets a bit too easy. You can basically get way too survivable and just face tank through most challenges. A little disappointing as the previous titles focused heavily on boss fight tactics and executing them nearly perfectly to succeed. But that came with its own set of aggravations as well.Highly recommended at full MSRP; basically a sin to not purchase this when it's on sale.. Pretty fun gamePretty good combatFunny side questHumorNice music(as usaul)Town/Village-ceptionI can tell itll be quite.... Memorable. Alright lets do this then.Gameplay: Its Ys, its fast paced and challenging but fair. The controls are really smooth, the characters are all good and the boss fights are a major treat with the exception of one boss who has a little too much HP, at least from my experience. Going around completing quests in trails in the sky fashion is also a bonus. The areas are all really interesting and fun and you can even find optional boss fights. The gameplay, which is the most important thing in a Ys game is fantastic as ever here. The soundtrack:Its Ys.......come on of course its amazing. I was rocking the entire way through. The story:Ohhhhh boy...... Look we don't play Ys for its story but this game really by the numbers. And I will say this right now, it has one of the most rushed endings I have ever seen in a falcom game. It just......ends. The characters have decently interesting dialogue between them and I do like them for that. Also while not as detailed as the trails games, the NPCs have arcs. And one character General Leo is easily my favorite character from this game. We see a decent amount of him but I really wish he had more screen time. He is one of those comic releaf characters that are also very capable on their own right. So overall my opinion of this game is very positive. I still prefer Ys Origin but out of all the Ys games that I have played this is probably my second favorite one. It has a certain charm to it that no other Ys games have for me.. Great port done well by Xseed. However, I did stumble upon some slight freezes rarely whenever my characters get inflicted with status effects and level ups mainly. Thoses freezes aren't too appalling towards my playthrough at the moment, but I would expect a patch or two to fix it. Nonetheless, it is still optimized and handled better than NIS America's Ys VIII.On my playthrough, I found dat gold pikkard at the Forest of Dawn. Too bad I do 0 damage to it........ Great Ys game, and a worthy canonical Ys IV. Highly recommend.. The series that needs to be played for all JRPG fans. Enjoyed every stories the game give. About the game:This is a pure action rpg that was originally developed for the PS Vita. The gameplay is pretty straighforward. You kill monsters to level up and get loot to be able to survive the next area/boss. With each area the monsters change. The bosses are unique and challenging. There's plenty of gear, upgrades and skills to choose from. The story is well-written and the characters are interesting.About the port:XSEED are known for releasing slightly buggy games, but they listen to community feedback and fix the issues very fast. This time as well. No crashes so far after the first patch. The graphical enhancements are good. The controls are insanely well ported. Keyboard + Mouse and all gamepads are supported. You can even choose what type of button images you want the game to display (PS4/360). I have absolutely no complaint here.tl;dr:It's Ys. Just buy it already.. Another year, another good Ys port from the fine folks at XSEED. Clearly Hyde Inc. was able to learn from their growing pains from their first port -- Ys SEVEN -- because as far as I can tell, there were significantly less issues with MoC on launch than its predecessor. The folks over at NIS America could learn a thing or two from this port -- the best I've heard from someone defending the Ys VIII PC port was that in "only" crashed 15 times during 50 hours of gameplay. You want to know how many times MoC crashed on me? Zero. Granted, I started playing the game roughly a week after launch, so I may have benefited from some later patches.Memories of Celceta is an interquel, taking place between Ys II and Oath in Felghana. It's Falcom's own take on Ys IV, which was previously farmed out to two other companies -- Tonkin House's downright mediocre Mask of the Sun for the Super Famicom, which was considered canonical by Falcom until MoC came out and Alfa System's The Dawn of Ys for the PC Engine, generally considered the best of the bump combat-style Ys games. Of course, neither of these versions came out in North America or Europe in any official capacity, so MoC gets the edge on that front. The game starts with Adol wandering around the town of Casnan, having completely lost his memory. He stumbles his way into the local inn before collapsing. Once he recovers, he makes the acquaintanceship of Duren, an information broker, who decides to help Adol, as he has a reputation for finding adventure (and therefore, useful information). Soon after, they are tasked by the local governess Griselda to explore and map out the mysterious forests of Celceta. Throughout the journey, Adol is reintroduced to people he met on his previous journey (one he has unfortunately forgotten) and finds many mysterious artifacts, stumbling upon another world-ending crisis as he often does.Memories of Celceta runs on a refined version of Ys SEVEN's engine, thus the party system from the previous game returns. This game also manages to add a new defense mechanic: the "Flash Move". If the player's character is able to dodge an enemy attack at a specific moment, the enemies onscreen slowdown for a brief period, similar to Bayonetta's Witch Time. Unlocking new special attacks is also different from the previous game, they're obtained by defeating a set number of "difficult" enemies. Frankly, I think I preferred the old system. The original release also included various touch puzzles that exploited the Vita's touch screen and touchpad, but later updates allowed them to be performed with standard controls (to make the game compatible with PSTV). The PC version allows players to use their mouse or the controller, which is a nice touch.XSEED and Hyde did a much better job on the graphics this time around, managing to even offset the filters present in the original Vita version of the game -- though a similar bloom option is available in the game. On top of that, they managed to even exceed (ha ha!) Ys SEVEN's 60 FPS, offering 120 frames per second and even uncapped, though the latter isn't particularly recommended. So just like the previous game (and every other Ys game XSEED's released on here), I'd recommend you pick it up if you're in the mood to play a damn fine action RPG. As with the previous game, it's a little on the easy side -- I did my first run on Hard Mode, just like with SEVEN.
